Linden Woods Fall Classic
Proudly hosted by the École Van Walleghem School Parent Council, the Linden Woods Fall Classic (LWFC) is a family-oriented event that puts the fun back in fitness and invests in our community.
Founded in 2004, the original goal of the LWFC was to raise funds to replace the aging play structure in Van Walleghem Park. That goal was achieved in 2008 with additional site improvements completed in more recent years.
In 2010, recognizing the blessings the Linden Woods community enjoys, committee members chose to “pay it forward” by helping those less fortunate.
Today the Linden Woods Fall Classic is primarily a fundraiser for Breakfast Programs in the Pembina Trails School Division and community projects that encourage healthy and active lifestyles for children and families.
Since its inception, the LWFC has raised over $150,000 for community projects. This includes over $50,000 that was donated to the Pembina Trails School Division to help participating schools purchase food for their breakfast programs. In 2016, 100% of net proceeds from the LWFC will support these worthy causes!
Pembina Trails School Division Breakfast Programs
The facts are in: poor nutrition and lack of physical activity lead to lower academic achievement. When basic nutritional and fitness needs are met, children are better able to learn and achieve. Within the Pembina Trails School Division several schools offer breakfast programs to children who would otherwise go to school hungry. Close to 500 children are enrolled in these programs and approximately 200 are fed each day before school hours, free of charge. While the Pembina Trails School Division does provide funding to cover the employment costs of a program coordinator, it is up to the school to collect food and monetary donations for the actual meals. The amount of additional funding required per school ranges from $2,000 – $10,000.
Funds raised through the LWFC helped build the spectacular EVOS play structure in Van Walleghem Park, a popular gathering spot for children and families throughout the year that is enjoyed by the whole community. Additional funds from the LWFC have facilitated additional site improvements and landscaping that have added tremendous value to this public space.
Money raised from the LWFC supported the redevelopment of the Linden Woods Community Centre including the addition of the new gymnasium, renewal of the outdoor skating rinks, and upgrades to the zamboni
